2D Animation-An Animation about Avolition
Project type
animation
Date
May 2024
Avolition is a severe lack of motivation, making it difficult to complete tasks, even essential ones like eating or using the toilet. It is a behavioral symptom comes from mental illness, while people often regard these symptoms as laziness. This animation aims to raise awareness about avolition, showing that those affected aren't just lazy but are struggling with an illness. I hope it helps others understand this condition and encourages those suffering to stop criticizing themselves for their 'laziness.'

Research and Understanding:
The project began with thorough research to understand bicycle transportation and Robbie Napper's typology of bike riders. This knowledge guided subsequent creative decisions for the animation.
Ideation and Concept Development:
I brainstormed ideas to visually represent Robbie's research findings. Exploring different styles and concepts helped us create a captivating portrayal of the diverse types of bike riders.
Character Design and Style Exploration:
I made various character designs, considering age, gender, and ethnicity to showcase a range of bike rider types. A consistent visual style was chosen to enhance the animation's storytelling.
Storyboarding and Visualization:
The script was turned into a detailed storyboard, planning animation sequences and transitions. I created rough animatics to refine pacing and ensure a smooth narrative flow before moving to detailed animation.
Animation Production and Enhancement:
Attention to detail was crucial during animation production. I focused on animating characters, adding text, and refining motion graphics to maintain clarity and impact, syncing with Robbie Napper's narration.
Feedback and Iteration:
Regular feedback from Robbie Napper helped improve the animation. We made revisions to ensure the visual representation aligned with Robbie's research and was engaging for the audience.
Finalization and Presentation:
After incorporating feedback and refining the animation, it was finalized for presentation. The finished product effectively communicated Robbie Napper's bike rider typology in a clear and engaging way.

Challenges and Solutions
Challenges Faced:
-
Limited Knowledge of Bike Transportation: I myself never ridden a bike before. Therefore, I have no idea about which types of bicycles are suitable for different travel purposes, and how our bodies work when we are riding bikes. This knowledge gap posed a hurdle in effectively translating Robbie's research into engaging visuals.
-
Short Animation Duration: Robbie would use it on conference before his speech. So it has to be short but effective, better less than 30 seconds.I needed to succinctly convey the complexity of Robbie's typology and engage the audience within a brief timeframe.
-
Ensuring Audience Engagement: The animation was intended as a social media post, requiring strategies to captivate and retain viewer interest.
Solutions Implemented:
-
Thorough Research and Learning: To overcome my lack of expertise in bike transportation, I spent some time researching and understanding how various bicycle types are suitable for different travel purposes. This knowledge informed the design and animation process.
-
Strategic Script Development: I crafted a script that strategically organized Robbie's typology into a concise narrative. By structuring the script around key thesis points, I ensured clarity and impact within the limited duration.
-
Incorporation of Audience-Centric Approach: Leveraging my background in Facebook ads optimization, I applied audience engagement techniques to the animation script. Starting with a compelling question and using distinctive character designs to capture and maintain viewer attention.
Outcomes and Key learnings
Project Outcome:
Through collaborative efforts with Robbie, I successfully produced an engaging animation that effectively communicated his research. The animation featured distinct character designs representing each bike rider type, accompanied by a captivating narrative aligned with Robbie's thesis.
Key Learnings:
This project provided invaluable insights into animation production, project management, and audience engagement strategies. Overcoming technical and creative challenges strengthened my skills in multimedia design and deepened my appreciation for effective communication through visual storytelling.
Overall, the experience highlighted the importance of adapting to unfamiliar subject matter, leveraging audience insights, and collaborating closely with stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
